Don Everett Pearce - Singer/Songwriter
Style: Urban Americana
Instruments: Vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Where: New York City (now), Los Angeles (then), San Diego (originally)
Main Gurus: Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Jagger/Richards
Most Recent Album: The Last Dive in Town (2009) self-released
I grew up in Encinitas, California. I started out playing loud post-punk suburban garage band stuff, but soon “went acoustic” in the San Diego coffeehouse scene of the 90s (incl. Java Joe’s, InnerChange, Lestat’s). Moved to New York, played a bunch of the bars & cafes while I lived there (incl. Bitter End, CBs Gallery, Banjo Jim’s/9C), and put out my first full-length album, Brutish Little Ballet, in 2002.
Moved to Los Angeles in 2004, where I completed an acoustic EP, Hope & Anchor (2007), and the full-length cd, The Last Dive in Town (2010). Relocated back to New York in 2011. CDs available at: www.cdbaby.com, downloads at itunes.com
My performance schedule over the last few years has been very light, but has included The Mint and Room 5 Lounge (L.A.), as well as Banjo Jims, Rockwood Music Hall and Googie’s Lounge (New York).
“URBAN AMERICANA?”
I call this music “Americana” because it features dobro, mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel & harmonica alongside standard rock instruments. “Urban” because the vibe here is not a heartland sort of thing. The vocals are twang-free and the songs are set in the city.
MOST RECENT ALBUM: The Last Dive in Town
The Last Dive in Town. (2009) is my second full-length album. The full-band songs were recorded in a studio in Brooklyn, NY while the acoustic tracks were recorded mostly my apartment near Los Angeles.
Musicians: The core band consists of Steve Antonakos (electric guitar), Chris Benelli (drums), Tony Tino (bass) and Ryan Williams (piano/organ). Additional musicians are Craig Ferguson (dobro, pedal steel & mandolin), Whynot Jansveld (bass) Neil Thomas (piano) and Chris Tedesco (fiddle).
The Songs: About half the songs on The Last Dive in Town were written the first time I lived in New York and a couple more were written after I’d moved to California but was still in a New York state of mind. Themes revolve around nightlife, friendship, romance & loss…which is just a fancy way of saying that the songs are mostly about women & bars.
